List of Pharmaceutical Distributors in China

List of Pharmaceutical Distributors in China

By Jon Wang, Healthcare and Distribution Lead at SEO Agency China (SAC), Shanghai. Last updated June 2026.

If you make a drug or a health product and you want it sold in China, “find a pharmaceutical distributor” is only the last step of a longer path. Before a distributor can move a single box, you need NMPA approval, an import license, and GMP compliance, and you need to know whether your sales come from hospitals, retail pharmacies, or online. This guide lays out the full route the way we map it for healthcare companies who sit down in our Shanghai office.

Cost-Effective Agency

KPI and Results focused. We are the most visible Marketing Agency for China. Not because of huge spending but because of our SMART Strategies. Let us help you with: E-Commerce, Search Engine Optimization, Advertising, Weibo, WeChat, WeChat Store & PR.

You will get the real 2026 picture, including the new Drug Administration Law rules that took effect this year, where drugs actually sell in China, the fragmented wholesaler landscape, and how to pick a distributor or partner who will grow your product instead of parking it. Plain language, no jargon.

China’s pharmaceutical market in 2026: huge, second only to the US, and opening up

China is the second-largest pharmaceutical market in the world after the United States, worth around 329 billion US dollars in 2025 and growing at roughly 6 to 7 percent a year toward the middle of the next decade (IMARC Group). The fastest growth is in biologics and biosimilars, but the bigger story for a foreign company is access: China is actively making it easier and faster for drugs already approved abroad to reach Chinese patients.

Two facts shape every entry plan. First, distribution is fragmented. China has more than 10,000 pharmaceutical wholesalers, and choosing the right one matters more than in most markets. Second, hospitals still dominate: hospital pharmacies account for roughly 80 percent of all drug sales, while retail pharmacies and fast-growing online channels make up the rest (EU SME Centre). Where your product sells decides which distributor you need.

The rules that changed this year: faster access for imported drugs

2026 is a real turning point for market access, and it works in your favor if you plan for it.

  • New Drug Administration Law regulations. The State Council issued the 2026 revisions of the Implementing Regulations of the Drug Administration Law on 27 January 2026, effective 15 May 2026, which streamline approval and are friendlier to overseas sponsors (Morgan Lewis).
  • Faster approval to supply. In late 2025 the NMPA introduced a policy to cut the time between approval and actual market supply, aimed at innovative and urgently needed medicines (Freyr Solutions).
  • Pre-approval batch importation. Commercial-scale batches of drugs already marketed overseas can now be imported and supplied earlier in China, as long as the product has NMPA approval and meets GMP (NMPA Announcement No. 96, 2025).
  • Wider priority review. The priority review path has been expanded to cover more overseas-marketed drugs, both novel and generic.

The takeaway is simple. The door is opening wider, but the gatekeeper is still NMPA approval, an import license, and GMP. Pick a partner who treats registration and compliance as core work, because no distributor can sell a product that is not cleared to enter.

The four ways to bring a drug or health product into China

Before you talk to any distributor, know which model you mean. Here is the honest comparison we draw for every healthcare company.

ModelHow it worksSpeed to launchBest for
Own NMPA license + local distributorYou hold the marketing authorization, and a licensed Chinese distributor imports, clears, and supplies hospitals and pharmacies.Longest, but you keep controlCompanies committed to China for the long term
License or partner with a Chinese pharmaA local company takes on registration and commercialization in exchange for rights or royalties.Faster to marketCompanies without a China team or budget for full setup
Contract sales organization (CSO)A specialist handles promotion and hospital access while you keep the license and supply.MediumBrands that want reach without building a salesforce
Online and retail for OTC and health productsNon-prescription and consumer-health products sell through retail pharmacy chains and online pharmacies.2 to 5 monthsOTC, supplements, and consumer-health brands

If you take one thing from this table, take this: the right model depends on whether your product is a prescription drug, a generic, or a consumer-health product, and on how much control you want to keep. Get that decision right before you sign anyone.

The regulatory path: NMPA approval, import license, and GMP

No distributor can help you skip this part, so understand it before you spend on anything else. Three things gate your product.

NMPA approval. The National Medical Products Administration is China’s drug regulator, the equivalent of the FDA. Your product needs a marketing authorization, and the path depends on whether it is an innovative drug, a generic, a biologic, or a consumer-health product. The 2026 reforms have made this faster for many imported drugs, but it is still the longest step, so start early.

Import drug license and GMP. The company that imports your product needs the right license, and your manufacturing has to meet China’s Good Manufacturing Practice standards. If you do not have a China entity, your distributor or partner acts as the importer of record and holds these licenses.

Quality and documentation. Cold chain where needed, batch records, and clean documentation are inspected. A single gap can hold a shipment or, worse, cost you a license. This is why your choice of distributor and their quality systems matters as much as their sales reach.

Where drugs and health products actually sell in China

This is the part most guides skip. No single channel does everything. Each plays a role, and your distributor needs to be strong in the ones that fit your product.

ChannelIts jobWhat matters there
Hospital pharmaciesThe bulk of prescription salesHospital listing, tenders, and a distributor with real hospital access
Retail pharmacy chainsOTC, chronic care, and refillsChain relationships, in-store visibility, and pharmacist trust
Online pharmacies & O2OConvenience and repeatCompliant listings, fast delivery, and chronic-care reorders
Digital credibility (Baidu, WeChat)Trust and educationA findable, professional presence partners and patients can verify

Hospital pharmacies: where most prescription sales happen

For prescription drugs, hospitals are the market. Getting onto a hospital’s formulary, winning tenders, and supplying reliably is the work that drives most of your volume. This is your distributor’s core job, so check they have genuine access to the hospitals and regions you care about, not just a license and a warehouse. Real hospital relationships are the hardest thing to fake and the most valuable thing to have.

Retail pharmacy chains: OTC and chronic care

Retail pharmacy chains matter for over-the-counter products, chronic-care refills, and consumer health. Here, chain relationships, shelf visibility, and pharmacist trust decide whether your product gets recommended. A distributor strong in retail is the right partner for an OTC or supplement brand, and the wrong one for a hospital-only drug.

Online pharmacies and O2O: the fast-growing channel

Online drug sales are growing quickly, and regulators are tightening oversight to keep them safe. For chronic-care medicines, OTC, and consumer health, online and online-to-offline delivery offer convenience and easy reorders. The rules are strict, so listings must be compliant, but the channel is too big to ignore. Our e-commerce in China page covers how online retail works for regulated and consumer-health products.

Digital credibility: Baidu and WeChat

Drug advertising to the public is tightly restricted in China, so this is not about flashy campaigns. It is about being findable and credible. When a hospital, a distributor, or a patient looks you up, you want a clean, professional presence on Baidu and WeChat that confirms you are a real, serious company. Our SEO in China and WeChat marketing in China pages explain how to build that trust within the rules.

What Chinese pharma buyers and partners want in 2026

  • Clean regulatory standing. NMPA approval, GMP compliance, and complete documentation come first. Nothing else matters without them.
  • Reliable supply. Hospitals and chains punish stockouts. A steady, traceable supply chain is worth more than a low price.
  • Clear clinical value. Real evidence and a clear place in treatment win formulary spots. Hype does not.
  • A credible, verifiable company. Partners check you out before they commit. A professional Chinese-facing presence builds confidence fast.
  • Fair, clear terms. Transparent pricing, defined territories, and honest targets beat vague promises every time.

How to choose a pharmaceutical distributor you can trust

With more than 10,000 wholesalers, the right distributor is the difference between a launch and a stalled product. Here is the checklist we hand healthcare companies, and the red flags that should make you walk away.

  • Check the licenses and quality systems. They must hold the right distribution and import licenses, meet GSP and GMP standards, and run proper cold chain if your product needs it. Ask to see the paperwork.
  • Match channels to your product. A distributor strong in retail pharmacies is the wrong fit for a hospital-only drug. Confirm they own real access to the hospitals, chains, or online channels you need.
  • Check geographic reach. China is regional. Some distributors are strong in certain provinces or city tiers. Make sure their map matches your target patients.
  • Ask for real references. Ask for two or three foreign drug or health brands they have grown, and talk to them. References beat promises.
  • Be careful with exclusivity. Exclusive rights can work, but tie them to clear sales targets, defined regions, and a fixed term, with the right to take them back.

The biggest red flag is a partner who promises hospital access everywhere but cannot name the hospitals or show the relationships. In China, a distribution license without real access is just a warehouse. If you want help screening partners, our find a reliable Chinese distributor service exists for exactly this.

A realistic plan to start

  1. Months 1 to 2. Confirm your product class and the right registration path. Start NMPA strategy and check whether you qualify for priority review or pre-approval batch import.
  2. Months 2 to 4. Decide your model: own license, partner, CSO, or retail and online for consumer health. Build a clean, credible Chinese-facing presence so partners can verify you.
  3. Months 3 to 6. Shortlist distributors by channel and region. Check licenses, quality systems, and references. Negotiate clear terms and targets.
  4. Ongoing. Track supply reliability, hospital and pharmacy coverage, and market access progress. Adjust partners by region as the data comes in.

Why focused healthcare brands still win

It is easy to feel small next to the global pharma giants in China. Do not. The 2026 reforms reward products with clear clinical value and a focused plan, not just the biggest budget. A specific product that meets a real need, clean regulatory standing, and the right distributor for your channel will beat a scattered, me-too launch. Win one channel and one region well, then grow on the track record you build.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a distributor to sell pharmaceuticals in China?

For prescription drugs, yes in nearly all cases. A licensed Chinese distributor imports, clears, and supplies hospitals and pharmacies, and acts as importer of record if you have no China entity. OTC and consumer-health products can also reach buyers through retail pharmacy chains and online pharmacies, but these still run through licensed distribution.

What is NMPA approval and does my product need it?

The NMPA is China’s drug regulator, similar to the FDA. Almost every drug needs a marketing authorization before it can be sold, and the path depends on whether it is innovative, generic, biologic, or consumer health. The 2026 reforms made approval faster for many imported drugs, but it is still the longest step, so start the strategy early.

What changed for imported drugs in 2026?

The State Council issued new Implementing Regulations of the Drug Administration Law, effective 15 May 2026, which streamline approval and are friendlier to overseas sponsors. The NMPA also expanded priority review for overseas-marketed drugs and now allows pre-approval commercial-scale batch importation for products that have NMPA approval and meet GMP, so patients get access sooner.

Where do most drug sales happen in China?

Hospital pharmacies account for roughly 80 percent of drug sales, which is why hospital access is the most important thing your distributor can offer. Retail pharmacy chains handle OTC and chronic-care refills, and online pharmacies are growing fast for convenience and repeat orders. Your product type decides which channel matters most.

How fragmented is pharmaceutical distribution in China?

Very. China has more than 10,000 pharmaceutical wholesalers, ranging from a few large national players to thousands of regional ones. This means the right distributor for you depends heavily on your product type, your target channels, and the provinces and city tiers where your patients are.

Can I sell drugs online in China?

Online drug sales are growing fast, especially for OTC, chronic-care medicines, and consumer health, but they are tightly regulated and oversight is increasing. Listings must be compliant and fulfilment must meet the rules. For the right products, online and online-to-offline delivery are a strong channel for convenience and reorders.

Can I advertise my drug to the public in China?

Drug advertising to the public is tightly restricted, and prescription-drug promotion to consumers is largely banned. Your digital work should focus on being findable and credible, so hospitals, distributors, and patients can verify you are a real, serious company. A clean, professional presence on Baidu and WeChat builds that trust within the rules.

How do I choose a trustworthy pharmaceutical distributor in China?

Check that the licenses and quality systems are real, including GSP and GMP and cold chain if needed. Match their channel and regional strength to your product, ask for two or three foreign brands they have grown and speak to those references, and tie any exclusivity to clear targets, defined regions, and a fixed term.

What is the difference between a distributor and a CSO?

A distributor imports, holds stock, and physically supplies hospitals and pharmacies. A contract sales organization, or CSO, focuses on promotion and access, such as getting onto formularies and reaching prescribers, while you keep the license and supply. Many companies use both: a distributor for logistics and a CSO for commercial reach.

Can small or niche healthcare companies succeed in China?

Yes. The 2026 reforms favor products with clear clinical value and a focused plan, not only the biggest budgets. A specific product that meets a real need, clean regulatory standing, a credible presence, and the right distributor for your channel can win. Start with one channel and one region, prove it, then grow on your track record.
