Health care systems in many countries are not organized to maintain people’s intrinsic capacities over their lifetimes, but to identify and treat acute episodes of illness. Changing the emphasis of health care systems from focusing on acute conditions to promoting integrated care that will result in Healthy Aging (maintaining functions) is urgently needed. An integrated approach to health across the life course is becoming essential.

Healthy aging for the WHO is not a life without diseases, healthy aging is when older adults are still able to do what they value. With an aging of the population, and the occurrence of chronic diseases, our health care system has to change to maintain function with aging and avoid dependency.
