The TikTok / Douyin app
TikTok, also known as Douyin, was launched in China in September 2016 by its parent company ByteDance. A year later, the application had grown worldwide. The TikTok app allows users to watch music videos, but also to film, edit and share their clips. It sounds pretty simple, but it’s a very popular concept. Indeed, TikTok was the most downloaded free iOS app in the first half of 2018. Finally, in September 2018, TikTok also became the most downloaded free app on the App Store in the United States and placed first on Google Play in October. It’s not just the two largest economies in the world where TikTok has proven popular. However, taking into account the download statistics from App Store and Google Play, TikTok ranked third in the world in November 2018. Since June 2018, she has been in the world’s top four.
In November 2017, ByteDance acquired the popular Musical.ly app (also based in China) for $1 billion, which also provided a short video-based social media service. TikTok was merged with Musical.ly application in August 2018, as the accounts of the app’s users, migrated to their TikTok accounts. This was seen as a way for the Chinese application to enter the U.S. market – with Musical.ly already boasting of a considerable American audience.

A)The use of the app in the world
TikTok is available in 150 markets in 75 languages.
Tiktok is also:
- 800 million euros of TikTok installation in October 2018 (not counting Android users in China)
- 80 million euros of TikTok downloads in October 2018, with an active user number of 40 million
TikTok was downloaded 68 million times worldwide in October 2018, making it the third most downloaded app in the world
In the first half of 2018, TikTok was downloaded 104 times from the Apple App Store, more than any other app during the same period
B) TikTok users
TikTok had 500 million monthly active users worldwide as of June 2018. Knowing that these results are not recent, these figures are likely to be significantly higher at this stage.
By comparison, Instagram boasts one billion monthly active users, with Instagram Stories recording 400 million daily users. These are also the latest statistics available.
According to one analysis, about one-third of Douyin users are between the ages of 20 and 24, just over a quarter are in the 25-29 age group, and 20% are under the age of 20.
82% of Douyin users use the app to find funny videos, with talent (56%) (54.1%).
Douyin users open the app four or five times a day, using it for about half an hour a day.
3) In China
In China, Douyin’s monthly number of active users was 300 million in June 2018, of which 150 million were daily in Douyin. This increased to 400 million monthly active users, and 200 million daily active users in November of the same year, according to Chinese media.
According to data published by WalktheChat, Douyin surpassed Kuaishou in the first quarter of 2018 to become the most popular short video app in the country.
According to the same study, Douyin’s market penetration rate was 30% in June 2018, compared to 25% for Kuaishou.
Today, the TikTok app is the most popular in the world because of its originality and ease of use.
