Kiwifruit in China 2026: What Zespri Teaches Produce Exporters
Updated
China grew 3.83 million tonnes of kiwifruit in 2023. It imported 154,000 tonnes in 2025. That import volume is about 4% of what the country already produces, and it takes almost all of the money at the top of the shelf. One brand takes most of that money.
Kiwifruit is the clearest branding lesson in Chinese fresh produce. The fruit is native to China. The country is the world’s largest producer by area and by volume. And yet the premium gold kiwifruit that sells at 8 to 11 RMB a piece in a Shanghai supermarket carries a New Zealand co-operative’s logo on a sticker. Zespri did not win on origin. It won on a brand system built over twenty-five years: one variety, one quality standard, a tightly controlled distribution list, one price story.
This article covers what the Chinese kiwifruit market actually looks like in 2026, who is winning and how, what Chinese shoppers pay and why, and what a fresh produce exporter can copy from the Zespri playbook. It also covers the part nobody copies well: what happens when your variety gets planted without your permission by 8,000 hectares of Chinese growers.
Key figures: kiwifruit in China
- US$610 million: China’s fresh kiwifruit imports in 2025, up 1% year on year, on 154,000 tonnes, up 2%. New Zealand alone accounted for US$600 million of that (国际果蔬报道 / International Fruit and Vegetable Report, February 2026).
- US$18.94 billion: total Chinese fruit imports in 2025, on 9.03 million tonnes, volume up 17.5% year on year, versus more than US$17.7 billion in 2024 (国际果蔬报道, February 2026).
- 3.826 million tonnes: Chinese domestic kiwifruit production in 2023, grown on 292,000 hectares planted and roughly 199,000 hectares bearing, as of August 2024 (Chinese Horticultural Society Kiwifruit Branch, published in 果树学报 / Journal of Fruit Science, November 2024).
- More than NZ$1.1 billion: Zespri’s China sales in 2024, on more than 1.5 billion individual pieces of fruit, reaching over 30 million Chinese households (China Daily, 7 May 2025).
- 45 million trays: Zespri’s own estimate of unauthorised G3 SunGold kiwifruit now grown in China every year, against roughly 40 million trays Zespri itself sells in the country (New Zealand Herald, 2025).
The questions fresh produce exporters ask us about China
These are the five questions that come up in almost every first call with a fruit exporter, a grower co-operative or a packing house looking at China.
If China already produces the fruit, is there room for an imported brand?
Yes, and kiwifruit proves it. China out-produces everyone and still imported US$610 million of fresh kiwifruit in 2025. The gap is not supply. It is consistency, grading and trust. See the market trends section.
Do I need my own brand, or can I sell to a Chinese importer and stop there?
Selling to an importer moves volume. It does not build price. The benchmark section shows what Zespri gained by owning the consumer relationship while a Chinese company handled the trucks.
Less than you think, and less every year. The consumer section gives the current price ladder on Freshippo and where the volume sits.
Can my variety be protected in China?
Plant variety rights exist and Chinese courts now enforce them, slowly. Zespri won a case that ordered the removal of more than 260 hectares of plantings. It still lives with 8,000 hectares of unlicensed fruit. Details in the benchmark.
Which platform do I start with, and what does it cost to be visible?
For fresh produce the answer is not Tmall first. The solutions section explains the sequence and the mechanism behind each channel.
China fruit market trends in 2026: imports keep growing, kiwifruit stays flat
Chinese fruit imports reached US$18.94 billion in 2025, up from more than US$17.7 billion in 2024, on 9.03 million tonnes, a 17.5% volume increase (国际果蔬报道, February 2026). Momentum continued into 2026: fruit and fruit products represented US$3.75 billion of imports in January and February 2026, or 11.1% of all agricultural imports, and Chinese customs recorded US$12.25 billion of fresh fruit, dried fruit and nuts over January to July 2026, up 4%.
Kiwifruit did not ride that wave. It grew 1% in value and 2% in volume. Here is where it sits.
| Category (fresh, 2025) | China import value |
|---|---|
| Durian, fresh | US$7.49 billion |
| Cherries | US$3.43 billion |
| Durian, frozen | approx. US$1.1 billion |
| Bananas | US$1.06 billion |
| Kiwifruit | US$610 million |
| Mangosteen | US$590 million |
| Young coconut | US$580 million |
| Longan | US$500 million |
| Blueberries | approx. US$400 million |
Domestic supply is huge and mostly invisible at retail
China planted 292,000 hectares of kiwifruit as of August 2024, with about 199,000 hectares bearing fruit, and produced 3.826 million tonnes in 2023 (Chinese Horticultural Society Kiwifruit Branch, 果树学报, November 2024). Shaanxi leads with 73,000 hectares and 1.3 million tonnes, followed by Sichuan at 50,000 hectares and Guizhou at 43,000 hectares. Six provinces each pass 200,000 tonnes a year.
Most of that volume never reaches a branded shelf. It moves through orchard-gate sales, pick-your-own agritourism, wholesale markets and regional wet markets. It has no grade, no sticker, no repeat-purchase story. That is the opening an import brand walks through.
Zespri gold kiwifruit peaked at 30 RMB per piece in China. It now sells between 5 and 11 RMB, and its price at Freshippo has dropped roughly 50% since it entered the retailer eight years ago, while sales grew 70% year on year (Sina Finance, 26 March 2025). Falling unit price with rising revenue is the signature of a brand moving from luxury novelty to weekly basket item. Exporters who plan a China entry on 2018 price points will be disappointed.
Variety rights are now a real battleground
Cuttings of Zespri’s G3 SunGold variety were taken to China in 2016. Plantings now cover more than 5,000 hectares in Sichuan alone and around 8,000 hectares nationally (New Zealand Herald, 2025). A court in Wuhan ordered compensation of about US$790,000 and the removal of more than 260 hectares of G3 vines (FreshPlaza, 2026). Enforcement is real. It is also slower than the vines grow.
Benchmark: who actually wins on kiwifruit in China
Zespri: one variety, one standard, one distributor
Zespri sold more than NZ$1.1 billion of fruit in China in 2024, more than 1.5 billion individual kiwifruit, into more than 30 million households (China Daily, 7 May 2025). Globally it posted record sales of NZ$5.9 billion on 248.1 million trays in the 2025/26 season (Zespri, 20 May 2026).
The decision that made this work was narrowing, not expanding. Zespri sells essentially two things a Chinese shopper can name: green and gold, plus a short eight-week red run. Every piece carries the same sticker, the same size grading and the same dry matter standard. A shopper who buys one gold kiwifruit knows what the next one tastes like. Nobody can say that about a bulk crate of Shaanxi fruit.
In May 2026 Zespri put a new brand platform behind that, 向善而育 (Grown for Good), and launched a Chinese mini-program called 每日向膳 built with Volcano Engine and Doubao AI, tied to a national dietary quality initiative with the China Health Promotion and Education Association (Beijing Daily, 12 May 2026). A fruit exporter is competing on nutrition education, not on Brix alone.
What you can copy: the discipline. Two SKUs, one standard, one message. What you cannot copy: twenty-five years of shelf presence and a grower levy that funds it.
鑫荣懋 Joy Wing Mau: the exclusive agent that made the brand physical
Zespri’s brand would be a poster without Joy Wing Mau. Founded in 1998, merged with Joyvio, and designated a national leading agricultural enterprise, it is one of the largest fruit distribution platforms in the country. It serves more than 5,000 supermarket points of sale and more than 20,000 fruit stores, and moves more than 1,200 tonnes of fruit a day. It supplies Sam’s Club and Yonghui.
Exclusivity is the point. One partner carries the cold chain, the retailer negotiations and the ripening schedule, so the brand owner keeps one set of standards instead of arbitrating between six importers undercutting each other. Most foreign fruit brands do the opposite, sign three importers for coverage, and watch their own price collapse in the wholesale market within two seasons. If you are choosing a partner, read our guide to Chinese food distribution companies and how to pick an agent.
Pagoda and Xianfeng Fruit: the retail layer that sets the price
In June 2025 Zespri signed MOUs with four Chinese partners: distributors Joy Wing Mau and Goodfarmer, and fruit retailers Pagoda 百果园 and Xianfeng Fruit. Those four represent roughly 80% of Zespri’s China business. The stated goal is to double the value of exports to China over ten years and to grow from 60 cities to 120 cities by the 2033/34 season (Zespri, 19 June 2025).
Specialist fruit chains matter more in China than in Europe. A Pagoda store sells fruit by grade with a stated sweetness score. That format rewards a brand that can guarantee a spec and punishes one that cannot. Freshippo plays the same role in top-tier cities: Zespri signed a 400 million RMB kiwifruit order with the retailer for 2025 (Sina Finance, 26 March 2025).
佳沃 Joyvio: the Chinese attempt at the same model
Joyvio, the agriculture arm of Legend Holdings founded in 2012, built a branded fresh produce business from the Chinese side, with owned orchards, controlled grading and its own retail identity. It is the closest domestic answer to Zespri’s structure, and its merger with Joy Wing Mau put distribution and branding under one roof. The lesson for a foreign exporter is uncomfortable: your Chinese partner may end up being your competitor’s competitor and your own supplier at the same time.
Chinese G3 growers: the copy that is becoming a brand
Near Chengdu, a grower named Wang Yi planted 12 hectares of Zespri G3 and created his own label, Shang Yi. G3 yields about 25% less than the local gold variety and is harder to grow, but it fetches a higher price (FreshPlaza, 2026). Chinese-grown G3 is on shelves from September to March, exactly when imported New Zealand fruit is at the end of its quality window. In Shanghai, shoppers now have gold kiwifruit twelve months a year, and a choice of origin.
That is the real threat, and it is not counterfeiting. It is competent local production wearing a local brand name. Every fresh produce category in China follows this arc: import first, substitute later. Blueberries did it. Cherries are doing it. Plan for it before it happens, not after.
The buyer of an imported kiwifruit is not a luxury shopper. She is a woman between 30 and 55 in a tier 1 or tier 2 city, buying fruit two or three times a week, often for a child or a parent as much as for herself. Health is the purchase trigger. Vitamin C, digestion and low sugar guilt do more selling work than provenance romance.
| Item at Freshippo (盒马) | Price | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Domestic red-flesh kiwifruit, 6 pieces | 22.9 RMB | Sina Finance, March 2025 |
| Zespri 宝石红 red kiwifruit, 6 pieces | 25.9 RMB | Sina Finance, March 2025 |
| Zespri gold kiwifruit, per piece, current | 5 to 11 RMB | Sina Finance, March 2025 |
| Zespri gold kiwifruit, per piece, historic peak | 30 RMB | Sina Finance, March 2025 |
| Zespri price change at Freshippo since entry | approx. minus 50% | Sina Finance, March 2025 |
Read that table carefully. The gap between a domestic red kiwifruit and a Zespri red kiwifruit is three RMB on a six-pack. Three RMB is the entire premium. Foreign exporters who arrive expecting a 3x multiple over local fruit are pricing for a market that closed around 2019.
The four behaviours that decide fresh produce sales
- 理性消费, rational spending. Shoppers compare unit prices across Freshippo, Meituan Maicai and Pinduoduo before buying. A brand premium has to be justified in one sentence on the pack.
- Health as the entry point. Zespri’s 2026 China activity runs through nutrition education and a diet mini-program, not through taste advertising. Fruit is bought as a health product.
- Gifting still moves the top of the range. Boxed premium fruit around Chinese New Year and Mid-Autumn carries margin that everyday retail does not. Kiwifruit underperforms here against cherries and durian, which look expensive in a box.
- Instant retail sets the rhythm. Fresh fruit is increasingly a 30-minute delivery purchase. That favours brands already listed with Freshippo, Meituan and Dingdong, and punishes brands that only exist on a Tmall flagship store.
What this means for a foreign exporter: your fruit will be bought on repeat, not on occasion. Build for the weekly basket. Price within 20% of the best local equivalent, guarantee the eating experience, and put your budget into being findable and being restocked, not into a launch campaign.
How you build a brand on a fresh fruit in China
Fresh produce is the hardest category to brand. The product is unbranded by nature, it varies from box to box, it rots, and the consumer forgets it the moment it is eaten. Here is the sequence that works, in order.
Start on Xiaohongshu. Fruit search behaviour there is functional: how to pick a ripe one, how to store it, how many calories, what to eat it with. Those are the queries you want to own. Seed 50 to 150 KOC posts with real users cooking, packing lunchboxes and comparing your fruit to the local variety, then amplify the ten that perform. Budget for a serious three-month seeding run sits in the range of 80,000 to 250,000 RMB depending on how many creators you use and how much paid amplification you buy.
Douyin comes second because it converts, but it converts on price. Use it for a seasonal push tied to your harvest window, with a live session from a partner retailer rather than a solo brand stream. A fruit brand streaming alone in China is streaming to nobody.
E-commerce: retail listing beats a flagship store
For fresh fruit, the sequence is inverted compared to cosmetics or wine. Get into Freshippo, Pagoda, Sam’s Club or a regional chain first. Those listings carry cold chain, staff and daily replenishment. A Tmall Global cross-border store is a poor fit for something that has to arrive cold in 48 hours. Fruitday and JD Fresh work as complements, not as a base.
All of that runs through one decision: your importer and distributor. Get that wrong and no amount of content fixes it. We wrote a practical guide on how to find a reliable Chinese distributor, and a working list of fruit importers in China.
Digital marketing: be the answer, not the ad
Three things carry a fresh produce brand between harvests.
- Baidu SEO in Chinese. Buyers, importers and retail category managers research suppliers on Baidu before a trade show. A Chinese-language site with your certifications, your protocol status and your grading standard wins meetings you never applied for.
- GEO on Chinese AI assistants. Doubao, DeepSeek, Kimi and Yuanbao now answer “which kiwifruit is best” and “is imported fruit worth the price”. Those answers are assembled from Chinese-language sources. If your brand and your numbers are not written in Chinese somewhere citable, you are absent from the answer. Zespri understood this early enough to build its 2026 China mini-program on Doubao’s own AI stack.
- WeChat private domain. A fruit brand lives on repeat purchase. A WeChat official account plus a service notification when your season opens is the cheapest revenue you will ever generate. Zespri reaching 30 million households is a CRM number as much as a distribution number.
Our team handles this side of the work: Chinese content, Baidu and AI search visibility, and platform setup. See our SEO company in Shanghai page for what that covers.
Protect the variety before you promote it
File your plant variety rights and your trademarks in China before your first shipment, not after your first success. Zespri filed and still spent years in court over G3. A grower who has not filed has nothing to argue with. Register the Chinese name of your brand too, including the phonetic version consumers will invent for you if you do not.
FAQ
How big is the Chinese kiwifruit import market?
China imported US$610 million of fresh kiwifruit in 2025, on 154,000 tonnes, up 1% in value and 2% in volume. New Zealand supplied US$600 million of it, which makes kiwifruit one of the most origin-concentrated fruit imports in the country (国际果蔬报道, February 2026).
Why does China import kiwifruit when it is the largest producer?
Domestic production sits at 3.83 million tonnes but most of it is sold ungraded through orchards, wholesale and regional markets. Imported fruit arrives with a fixed size grade, a dry matter standard and a brand guarantee. Chinese shoppers pay the difference for predictability, not for taste alone.
Should I sell to China cross-border or through a local distributor?
For fresh fruit, through a local distributor with cold chain. Cross-border e-commerce suits shelf-stable products. Fresh produce needs customs clearance under a bilateral phytosanitary protocol, a cold chain partner and retail listings. Check first whether your country has an active protocol for your fruit.
How long before a fresh produce brand sees results in China?
One season to get listed, two to three seasons before repeat purchase shows up in reorder volumes. Brands that judge China on a single harvest window usually quit just before the second season pays.

Working with us on fresh produce
We are a team of 15 in Jing’an, Shanghai. We work with fresh produce exporters, grower co-operatives and food importers who need to exist in Chinese: a Chinese-language site that ranks on Baidu, visibility inside Chinese AI assistants, Xiaohongshu and Douyin content that survives past the launch, and support finding and briefing a distributor who will defend your price instead of dumping it.
A short anonymised example. A Southern Hemisphere stone fruit exporter came to us with a good protocol, two Chinese importers and no Chinese identity at all. Buyers searching their name on Baidu found nothing. Their fruit reached Shanghai and sold as generic imported fruit at whatever the wholesale market decided that week.
We did three things. We built a Chinese site around what buyers search: variety, harvest calendar, grading standard, protocol status, packing house certifications. We seeded Xiaohongshu with sixty KOC posts on how to pick and store the fruit, mentioning the brand’s Chinese name in every one. And we wrote the brand’s Chinese reference content so that Doubao and DeepSeek could answer questions about the origin without inventing an answer.
By the second season the exporter had inbound contact from two retail chains that had found them on Baidu, and one of the original importers agreed to a fixed brand price because the fruit now had a name shoppers recognised. Nothing about the fruit changed. What changed is that it stopped being anonymous.
