Douyin vs Bilibili vs WeChat Channels: Which Video Platform for Your Brand in China?
China has more video platforms than any other market. Every year, new ones appear. But for foreign brands, three platforms consistently produce results: Douyin for mass reach and direct commerce, Bilibili for Gen Z audiences and niche authority, and WeChat Channels for depth with customers you already have. Each works differently. Each rewards a different type of content. Jon Wang breaks down the three, with real numbers, so you can choose without wasting budget.
Douyin has 700 million daily active users. That number is not a typo. It means Douyin reaches more people every single day than the entire population of Europe. The algorithm is the key difference from every other platform. It does not care how many followers you have. A new brand account can publish a video on Monday and have one million views by Wednesday if the content performs. Every video gets an initial test audience. If engagement is strong, the algorithm pushes it wider. This gives foreign brands a real entry point with zero existing audience.
Short video format, between 15 and 60 seconds, is where discovery happens. Douyin Shop connects that video directly to a product listing. One tap and the viewer is on your product page. This shortens the sales funnel to seconds. Live commerce takes it further. Brands and KOLs host live sessions that can run for hours, selling thousands of units in a single stream. Beauty brands like L’Oreal and Perfect Diary have built their China revenue models around this mechanic.
Douyin works best for consumer brands: beauty, food, lifestyle, fashion, home goods, sportswear. If your product is visual and can be shown in under one minute, Douyin is your first platform. Budget: plan for RMB 5,000 to 20,000 per month minimum if you want ad-assisted growth. Organic only is possible but slower.
Bilibili has 340 million monthly active users. The average age is 23. That alone tells you what you are dealing with: a platform built for young, educated Chinese consumers who grew up on the internet.
Content on Bilibili is long-form. Videos run between 5 and 20 minutes. Viewers expect depth, structure, and production quality. They will leave fast if content feels like an ad. Categories that perform consistently include gaming, anime, technology, education, beauty tutorials, and outdoor adventure. If your brand fits one of these spaces, Bilibili gives you access to an audience that is genuinely passionate.
Sponsored content and brand integrations work far better than traditional ads here. Bilibili creators have loyal subscribers who trust their recommendations. A well-briefed creator who genuinely uses your product will convert better than a paid banner. Jon Wang puts it directly: “Bilibili audiences will research your brand before they share your video. They are critics, but the best ones.” That criticism is also a signal. If your product earns positive organic mentions on Bilibili, it builds trust that no ad budget can replicate.

WeChat Channels: video for brands with existing audiences
WeChat Channels has 500 million monthly active users. But the number is not the point. The context is. Channels lives inside WeChat, the app where your customers already manage their daily life: work chats, family groups, payments, customer service. Video content shared through Channels travels inside those same conversations, one-to-one or in group chats. This is private social sharing, not algorithmic broadcast.
That changes everything about how content spreads. A video on Douyin goes wide because the algorithm pushes it. A video on Channels goes wide because real people send it to people they trust. The reach ceiling is lower, but the quality of attention is higher.
Channels works best for brands that already have an active WeChat Official Account with a real follower base. It also fits B2B companies publishing thought leadership content, and brands that run live commerce with WeChat Pay as the checkout method. If you have zero WeChat presence today, build your Official Account first. Channels without an existing audience is a slow start.
How to choose: a simple decision framework
Three questions will take you to the right answer.
Do you need mass discovery fast? Start with Douyin. The algorithm works for unknown brands. The commerce tools are built in. You can test quickly and see results within weeks.
Do you target educated, quality-focused users aged 18 to 30? Bilibili is your platform. Invest in creator partnerships and long-form content. Do not treat it like Douyin. The format and audience expectations are completely different.
Do you already have WeChat followers or a WeChat shop? Then Channels is a logical extension. Your existing audience is already on the app. Video content will move through your existing community without starting from zero.
Many brands run two platforms at once. That is realistic with the right team. But starting on all three simultaneously spreads resources thin and produces mediocre content everywhere. Jon Wang’s rule: if in doubt, start Douyin. It has the largest reach, the clearest commerce path, and the fastest feedback loop. Once Douyin is working, layer in a second platform based on your audience data.

FAQ
Can a foreign brand open a Bilibili channel?
Yes. Foreign brands can register a Bilibili brand account using a Chinese business entity or through an authorized local partner. The verification process requires a Chinese business license. If you do not have a WFOE or local entity, working through a certified agency is the standard route. Once verified, the account operates like any other brand channel on the platform.
How much does Douyin advertising cost in China?
Douyin advertising costs vary by format and targeting. CPM (cost per thousand impressions) typically runs between RMB 15 and 80, depending on audience targeting and competition in your category. A realistic starting budget for paid Douyin campaigns is RMB 5,000 to 20,000 per month. Live commerce and Douyin Shop campaigns have separate cost structures. Testing with a small budget first gives you data before scaling.
Is it possible to be on all three video platforms at once?
Yes, but it requires dedicated resources for each. Content formats are different: short clips for Douyin, long-form for Bilibili, community-first for Channels. Repurposing the same video across all three rarely works well. Brands with a content team of three or more can manage two platforms effectively. All three at once is realistic for larger teams or brands working with a China-focused agency that handles production and posting.

Concrete case studies… avoid Douyin or Bilibili…
A retail price of 200 to 300 US dollars for a 100 ml bottle places a brand firmly in the niche or “true salon” segment of the Chinese market. The broader premium niche sweet spot currently sits between roughly 85 and 210 dollars per bottle, often for 50 ml or 75–100 ml sizes. Local Chinese niche brands such as Documents, To Summer, and Melt Season frequently price in the 120–250 dollar range depending on volume and positioning. International houses such as Byredo, Diptyque, Le Labo, and Kilian regularly achieve 200–350 dollars or higher for 100 ml.
Chinese female consumers aged 24–40 in major cities accept these price levels when three conditions are met: a distinctive olfactory identity, strong storytelling or cultural resonance, and visible social proof on Xiaohongshu. Because average perfume consumption per person remains lower than in Europe or the Middle East, consumers are often willing to invest in fewer but higher-quality bottles. Many become casual collectors, owning multiple scents for different moods and occasions.Pricing at 200–300 dollars per 100 ml is therefore commercially viable, but it is not automatic. The brand must justify the premium through packaging, narrative, and consistent seeding. Below approximately 100 dollars, quality perceptions can suffer. Above 300–350 dollars, the brand competes directly with the most established international niche names and needs exceptional differentiation.
For a foreign niche brands , the 200–300 dollar zone is ambitious yet realistic, provided the China strategy begins with desire creation on RedNotes and only later scales volume on Tmall.
