In order to facilitate tourism with Russia, the two countries signed an agreement in June 2015 in Shaoshan where the Chinese President, Xi Jinping, said that they are “friends forever”. This agreement allows traveling in Russia without a visa for groups of at least 5 travelers. It also provides the opening of ten “red tourism” road trips, between China and Russia. Twenty tour operators from both countries have signed cooperation agreements to facilitate these trips. Vladivostok is the second favorite Russian city among Chinese tourists, with Moscow topping the list. Moreover, the introduction of electronic visas made travel easier for Chinese citizens. The two countries are working together to boost tourism. Indeed, Russia also hired Chinese-speaking staff at airports in order to accommodate growing number of visitors from China. With this special visa-free basis, the most popular routes among Chinese tourists were Moscow and the second-largest city St. Petersburg, which attracted 52 percent of the visitors, followed by border regions and some parts of Siberia.

Why are Chinese tourists going to Russia?
